Is Your Smartphone Loaded With Music – Or Something A Little More Constructive (Instructive)?

Goldfish_Wallpaper_Trois_by_tacostandwallpapersGoldfish_Wallpaper_Trois_by_tacostandwallpapersctbBugI am a total music junkie.  I grew up playing in the high school marching band, stage band, pep band, and concert band.  I play drums and guitar.  And to top that all off, my “hobby” for the past 20 or so years has been to sing and play guitar in various local country and rock bands that orbit the twin cities metro area.  But let’s call a spade a spade here – I am no John Lennon or Elvis Presley.  I will never make enough money to ever call this a “career”.

So ask me how much music I have on my smartphone?  I am willing to bet lots more than the majority of you.  Like I said, I’m a music junkie.  It would take me days and days on end to listen to each and every song one after another.  Of course this I will never do.  I bet there’s a couple hundred songs on there I enjoy hearing more than once a month or so.  The rest is just taking up space.  It belongs back in my itunes library, where I can dredge them up if I ever have the urge.

I didn’t mention that my day job is accounting.  This is what I do in order to have a roof over my head, clothes on my back and keep the family fed.  I need to keep abreast of what’s going on in the accounting world, and the business world in general.  Listening to the 6:00 news isn’t going to make that happen.  I need to absorb literature – industry specific literature.  But this has proved to be more and more difficult given that I have a job and family.

Oh but I have discovered an easy way to add to my vocational vernacular (I can’t believe I finally found a way to use that word in a sentence, even if the definition is a bit of a stretch).  iTunes has given me this in the form of audiobooks and podcasts.  Instead of rocking out to the musical styling’s of Mick Jagger or Robert Plant on my travels to and from work, I can now actually learn something by listening to the words of Dave Ramsey or Warren Buffet or Steve Jobs.  And to top it off, much of this is actually free to download.  How much Elvis Costello can you get for free nowadays?

I’m a bit embarrassed to note that this was revealed to me by someone else.  You would think that, being a music junkie, I would be more aware of all that itunes has to offer.  But I wasn’t.  Now I am.

You owe it to yourself and your career to pull some of those old forgotten tunes out of your smartphone library and take a little wander through the iTunes library of audiobooks and podcasts.  See what you can find that just might spice up your vocational vernacular (used it again!) just a bit.
