The most dreaded sentence any employee wishes to hear in their career, but a hard reality in today’s economy. We understand that there will ALWAYS be hiring accompanied by feelings of excitement) and firing with the accompanying anxiety, stress and shock, and we cannot wish it away.

Any, yes ANY position we have is temporary even if it’s for 10+ years as there are no guaranteed jobs for life anymore due to organizations restructuring, downsizing, market conditions, recession, performance etc.

Any employee going to work in the morning can never be sure, what awaits them that day. By evening their job may be gone. Remember that our position was only secure through last night. Today, tomorrow, next week or even next month anything can happen.

If we wish to have continuous employment throughout our working life then we need to be continually looking for new career opportunities. It does not mean that we will exercise or take action on any of those opportunities; however we should always be looking since the best time to look for a job is while you are in a job.

Constantly looking means that we are constantly uncovering opportunities to future proof our careers. should the day ever come when we hear the words “You’re fired!” we can then simply exercise one of the opportunities we have uncovered 9while employed).

To quote Blake (Alex Baldwin) from the film Glengarry Glen Ross, continuous employment requires us to continuously focus on our A-B-C’s: A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Meaning that we may not want every job just we certainly want every job offer!

    Following Graham Riley’s recent post on Career Toolbox Int. Do good by being good.. I was moved to respond privately to him, thanking him for the post and relating my current work situation. Much to my surprise, He responded shortly after to my email, thanking me for sharing my information with him, and asked if I would be free to talk the next day at 1 p.m. Of course I responded yes, who wouldn’t, and he actually took the time to call me, giving me support and instructions for improving my LinkedIn profile. The conversation lasted 26 minutes. Obviously, this man has a heart of gold, to take time out of his busy schedule to encourage and educate me on my profile and job search. Thanks Graham, and I will keep you updated on this blog!
