I am a total music junkie. I grew up playing in the high school marching band, stage band, pep band, and concert band. I play drums and guitar. And to top that all off, my “hobby” is to sing and play guitar in various local country and rock bands that orbit the Twin Cities Metro area. But let’s call a spade a spade here – I will never make enough money to turn this into a new career.
I have hundreds and hundreds of songs selected in my streaming service. I’ll probably never listen to them all, but I enjoy having them all there.
Meanwhile, my day job is accounting. This is what I do in order to have a roof over my head, clothes on my back and keep the family fed. I need to keep abreast of what’s going on in the accounting world, and the business world in general. Listening to the 6:00 news isn’t going to make that happen. I need to absorb industry-specific information. But this has proved to be more and more difficult given with that aforementioned job and family.
So one way I discovered to add to my vocational vernacular is to use those streaming services to download podcasts. I also subscribe to a downloadable book service, and another that reads the book to me! When the pile of content grows too high, I can even sign up to receive abstracts of popular books on business.
When I just want a soundtrack for my life’s activities, my music is always there. But when I need business advice in the form of information, insight, and inspiration, these materials are right there waiting! And much of it is free to download.
You owe it to yourself and your career to tune down the tunes and wander through the digital world of podcasts, ebooks, audiobooks, and other downloadable items. Find out al that’s out there to spice up your vocational vernacular.
