Life and Career Success – What Is It?
man celebrating successs

Like beauty, success is in the eyes of the beholder. But this has to be your personal definition–not that of family or school or community. Knowing what success means to you helps you strive for it and to know when you have achieved it.

What are your measuring sticks for your success and happiness in life? Here are some parameters you can judge by:

  • Do you enjoy what you are doing?
  • Do you have a great balance between work and personal life?
  • Are you satisfied with your contributions more days than not?
  • Do you look forward to getting out of bed and getting on with your day most days?
  • Do you look at challenges as opportunities?
  • Are you grateful for who and what you are?
  • Do you have no need to keep up with the Joneses?
  • Is wealth not a driver?
  • Is position or power not a driver?
  • Do you get to learn a little bit every day?
  • Do you work with energizing people?
  • Do you have the time and inclination to travel and gain different experiences?
  • Do you belong to a faith community?
  • Can you leave your mistakes behind and yet learn from them?
  • Are you an inspiration to others?
  • Will you leave a legacy?
  • Do you have a large circle of friends?
  • Do you find the time for the important things and people in your life?

A little introspection can help you keep your most important values front and center. Remember, whatever happens, enjoy your life, your community, and your family, and keep your work life in balance.
